Sellafield Ponds Decommissioning

Carillion has been working through its ACKtiv Nuclear joint venture with Atkins and Aker Kvaerner on decommissioning projects within the Magnox Legacy Ponds and Silos complex since 2001. This legacy clean-up work figures highly in the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s list of priority tasks.

ACKtiv Nuclear has successfully delivered a programme of early enabling and risk mitigation work in support of the legacy waste retrievals programme. This has involved significant engineering design and innovation, development of technical and safety cases, procurement and installation of complex technical equipment, construction management and site decommissioning operations. Working closely with British Nuclear group, ACKtiv Nuclear has delivered all milestones on or ahead of time and achieved an exemplary safety record.

ACKtiv Nuclear has recently been awarded follow-on contracts for the export of spent Magnox fuel from the facility and the retrieval of sludge and other waste products from the Ponds complex.
